How to Clean Your Pipe

Let's be honest — a dirty pipe is a bad pipe. Resin builds up fast, and before long you're getting harsh, bitter hits that taste nothing like they should. The good news? Cleaning a glass hand pipe is genuinely easy once you know the steps, and you probably already have most of what you need at home.

Here's exactly how to do it properly — no guesswork, no wasted product, no cracked glass.

What You'll Need

•Isopropyl alcohol (90%+ is best — the higher the better)

•Coarse salt (table salt works, but rock salt or sea salt is more effective)

•A zip-lock bag or small container with a lid

•Pipe cleaners or cotton buds

•Warm water

💡 Pro tip: 99% isopropyl alcohol cuts through resin significantly faster than the standard 70% variety. If you can find it, it's worth it.

Step-by-Step: Cleaning Your Glass Pipe

Step 1 — Knock out loose debris

Before anything gets wet, turn your pipe upside down and gently tap it over a bin to dislodge any loose ash or dry herb. You can use a toothpick or pipe cleaner to poke through the bowl and carb hole to break up anything stubborn. This step makes the soak far more effective.

Step 2 — Soak it in isopropyl alcohol

Place your pipe into a zip-lock bag or small container. Pour in enough isopropyl alcohol to fully submerge it, then add a generous tablespoon of coarse salt. The salt acts as an abrasive — it physically scrubs the inside of your pipe while the alcohol dissolves the resin.

Soak time guide:

•Lightly used pipe: 30 minutes

•Moderately gunked up: 1–2 hours

•Heavily resinous: overnight soak

Step 3 — Shake it

Seal the bag or put the lid on your container, then shake it firmly for 1–2 minutes. The salt and alcohol mixture will work together to scrub away resin from the inside walls. You'll start to see the liquid turn dark brown — that's the resin coming off. A good sign!

Step 4 — Rinse and scrub

Remove your pipe and rinse it thoroughly under warm running water. Use a pipe cleaner or cotton bud to scrub inside the stem and bowl — most of the residue should come off easily at this point. For stubborn spots, dip your pipe cleaner in a little fresh isopropyl and give it another scrub.

Step 5 — Rinse again, then dry

Give it a final thorough rinse with warm water to make sure all the alcohol and salt is gone. Then let it air dry completely — ideally for at least 30 minutes — before using it again. Smoking through a wet pipe is never pleasant.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

•Using boiling water: Thermal shock can crack your glass. Stick to warm water, not hot.

•Skipping the soak: Just rinsing with water won't dissolve resin — it needs the alcohol.

•Using bleach or harsh chemicals: These can damage your glass and are harmful if any residue remains.

•Not drying fully: Residual moisture affects taste and can cause issues over time.

How Often Should You Clean Your Pipe?

As a general rule: the more you use it, the more often it needs cleaning. A quick rinse after every few sessions keeps resin from hardening. A proper deep clean like the one above every 1–2 weeks will keep your pipe in great shape and your hits tasting their best.

You'll know it's time for a clean when the glass starts to look dark and cloudy, airflow feels restricted, or the flavour turns harsh and unpleasant.
